BSW Group – the UK’s largest integrated forestry and timber business – is proud to have been involved in a brand new children’s book aimed at educating the next generation about sustainability and the role of British timber.

‘Sitka Spruce: The Amazing Timber Tree’ is the latest book by ‘Tales from Mother Earth’, an organisation that aims to educate and empower children to connect with the natural world in a positive way. Available both as a physical picture book and a soundtracked audiobook, this new story is all about the fantastic benefits of timber, and in particular the Sitka Spruce – one of the UK’s most important crops. Aimed at children from 3 – 10 years old, the heartwarming story explains how Sitka Spruce is grown in managed forests, how it is harvested and turned into timber, and how this sustainable resource is used to construct the world around us.

The book was commissioned by Morgan Sindall, with support from BSW Group, Timber Development UK and Woodknowledge Wales, with experts from these leading businesses working closely with author Jenny Bailey. Experts from BSW Group members – Ben Goh and Carol Davies from Maelor Forest Nurseries, and Olivia FitzGerald and Emyr Parker from Tilhill Forestry – also contributed to the story with some insight into the industry.

Gavin McLaughlin, BSW Group’s Head of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), said: “Increasing people’s understanding of the importance of British timber is, of course, something that is very important to us at BSW Group. We absolutely jumped at the chance to be part of this great book that teaches the next generation all about it. We’re huge fans of Tales from Mother Earth and their fantastic work, which helps children understand the importance of looking after the natural world. We hope that everyone who reads or listens to ‘Sitka Spruce’ will have as much fun as we did helping to create it!”
